Herod Archelaus
Herod Archelaus was born in 23 B.C. He was
born the son of King Herod the Great and his wife Malthace.
Herod Archelaus was the full brother of Herod Antipas and a half brother
of Herod Philip. The three brothers were sent to Rome as hostages.
In Rome, Herod Archelaus
received his education. In one of
his wills (he had several wills), Herod the Great appointed his son Herod
Archelaus as king. The Roman emperor at the time, Augustus,
wrote and told Herod Archelaus that he was to only be known as ethnarch (this
means ‘national leader’) and was given the lands of Samaria, Judea and
Idumea. Herod Archelaus is written about in New
Testament passages. In Matthew 2:22 it says, “But when he
[Joseph] heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father
Herod, he was afraid to go there…” Joseph
was warned in a dream not go, so he, Mary and baby Jesus went to live in
Nazareth rather then Bethlehem. Herod Archelaus was so horrible that Rome
had to eliminate him from his place as the ethnarch.
The Jews and Samaritans had come together united (an unusual thing for
the two countries, considering all the animosity they had for each other) and
petitioned Rome to remove Herod Archelaus from their leadership. In the year 6, Herod Archelaus was exiled
to Vienne in Gaul. This was after a
bloody uprising led by Judas the Galilean.
After this, Judea became a province of the Roman Empire.
It is thought that Herod Archelaus died in 18 A.D.
