Bean
Phaseolus spp. There
are many different types of beans.
-Romano beans are flattened snap
beans
-Filet or haricot beans are eaten
when young and tender
-Bush beans
-Pole beans
-Scarlet runner beans attract
hummingbirds
-Kidney beans and other drying
beans
Pole beans are ready to harvest earlier that pole beans, but pole beans
produce a larger yield over a longer period.
I like to plant both for a little variety.
SITE: Plant in full sun to part
shade. When beans are planted in
very shady areas, the yield is decreased. The
pH should be 6.0 to 6.5 (with the exception of scarlet runner bean, they
tolerate a low pH). The soil should
be well drained. Abundant moisture
is required. Beans are pretty
adaptable to most climates.
For an interrupted harvest, keep
planting for four to six weeks every two weeks. HOW
TO GROW: Plant seeds one inch deep
after the last frost.
Bush beans should be spaced two to three inches apart in rows two to
three feet apart. Pole
beans should be planted at the base of a six to eight foot tall support, spacing
seeds about 2 1/2 inches apart. Or
you could also plant six seeds at the base of each pole, with the poles spaced
four feet apart. A trellis, fence,
or tripod made of poles will also work well .
High-nitrogen fertilizers can
decrease your yield.
Snap beans should be picked when
the pods are full-sized, with the beans inside still being small.
Picking the bean pods daily keeps the pods tender, and also increases the
yield.
CULTIVATORS:
Snap bush: 'Contender', 40
to 50 days, 6-inch-long pods, tolerates heat, resists mildew; 'Venture', 55
days, long, tender, Blue Lake type, curved pod, high yields, resists mosaic
virus, seed tolerates cool soil; 'Jumbo', 65
days, high yields, long broad, flat pods, tolerates coolness; 'Royal Burgundy',
60 days, purple pod turns green when cooked, tolerates cool weather; 'Tendercrop',
55 days, round, tender pods, high yields, virus resistant; 'Marbel', 54 days,
filet type, purple-streaked, harvest when long and thin.
Snap pole:
'Kentucky Blue', 73 days, long, straight, deep green pods, extended
harvest, tender even when large; 'Kentucky Wonder', 64 days, fleshy, tender
9-inch pods, also can be shelled fresh or dried.
Wax beans:
'Goldmarie', 67 days, pole type, intensely yellow Romano type, 10-inch
pods, tender even when large.
Shelling beans:
'Pinto', 90 days, viney, can grow on a pole, use dry or fresh shelled;
'Navy', 85 days, small semi-vining, white, oval bean; 'Red Kidney', 100
days, reliable, pods inedible, beans large, flavorful;
'Adzuki', 90 days, long, narrow pods, high yielding, can be eaten as snap
beans when immature; 'Black Turtle', 85
days, dwarf bush type, high yields, not adapted to the extreme North, can be
eaten as snap bean when mature.
Scarlet runner:
Choose types sold as vegetables, not as ornamentals, for best production;
bush types aren't very productive. 'Scarlet
Emperor', 70 days, large flavorful pods; 'Red Knight', 70 days, 10-12-inch
string less pods. |
